Top five dishes for adventurous diners in Sydney, Australia

Glutinous Korean rice cakes at Moon Park

Redfern’s minimalist Korean restaurant Moon Park offers great easts executed with skill. We love the tteokbokki – those glutinous little cylindrical rice cakes rolled in chunky, chopped-up toasted peanuts.

Chicken heart and chicken skin yakitori at Chaco Bar

It’s all sticks all the time, here at this tiny Japanese yakitori restaurant built on the old Jazz City Diner site. You want heart pipes? Liver? Gizzards? Gristle? They’ve got ’em, along with plenty more protein that isn’t quite so gutsy. The meats are grilled over white charcoal and served over piles of roughly chopped raw white cabbage. By the time you’re done with your juicy, salty chicken thigh or crisp folds of strangely sweet chicken skin, that cabbage will have turned into a well-seasoned side of its own.

Chaco Bar details:  Address 238 Crown St, Darlinghurst 2010, Telephone 02 9007 8352

Finger sandwiches at Rockpool

Finger sandwiches of crabmeat bound in Tabasco mayonnaise and big wads of caviar over a thin layer of crème fraîche translate as thin, cocktail friendly toast soldiers.

Sweet, salty liquorice bread at Yellow

The intensity of chef Brent Savage’s liquorice bread is such that you can smell it three tables over. The wedge of richly flavoured, ebony-coloured, almost-cake is coated in a spray of sea salt flakes. It’s served with a splodge of whipped butter, which you probably won’t need.

Address: 57-59 Macleay Street , Potts Point 2011              Telephone 02 9332 2344

Open Brunch Sat-Sun 8am-3pm; Dinner Mon-Sun 6pm-late

Little blood sausages at Ester

Though Ester’s menu is an ever-evolving roll call of rustic originality, there are a few mainstays like the blood sausage sanga: pinkie-sized morcilla on a piece of steamed white bread with a squiggle of aioli – a soft, sweet and giving sandwich with great snap.
